How to get to Walter Peak from Queenstown

Understanding how to get to Walter Peak starts with Queenstown. The High Country Farm stands across Lake Wakatipu, at the foot of Walter Peak on the western shore. For a farm outing, travel to the Queenstown departure point and take the crossing attached to your chosen programme. Treat an airport arrival, a journey through town and the boat as separate parts of the day.

Queenstown Airport uses the code ZQN. Public buses, taxis, rideshare and prebooked transfers provide ways into town. The airport describes Downtown as roughly 20 minutes away, but that is a traffic-dependent guide rather than a guaranteed connection to a ship. Allow room for collecting luggage, reaching the waterfront and following the meeting instructions on your booking.

Airport bus and current fares

Orbus route 1 links Sunshine Bay, Queenstown and the airport on its Sunshine Bay to Remarkables Shops service. The route information describes approximately 15-minute daytime intervals and 30-minute intervals later in the evening. Use the timetable for the actual day rather than treating that frequency as a departure time.

The fare page updated on 29 September 2026 lists an airport journey for adults aged 19 and over at NZD 2.50 with a Bee Card or NZD 10 in cash. For ages 5 to 18, the airport fare is NZD 1.50 with the appropriate registered Bee Card or NZD 8 in cash. Children under 5 travel free. Eligibility must be attached to the card where required.

Buses accept cash or Bee Card, rather than bank or credit cards as fare payment. That differs from the cashless arrangements on the ships and at Walter Peak. Keep the bus journey separate in your budget: Orbus ferry fares are not Walter Peak excursion fares. For an overnight stop before sailing, compare Queenstown accommodation areas.

Taxi and transfer from Queenstown Airport (ZQN)

A prebooked transfer from Queenstown Airport to Queenstown can cover the road stage after your flight. Choose Queenstown as the destination and arrange the drop-off around your town plans. Continue separately to the waterfront and join the booked ship for Walter Peak. This is an airport-to-town transfer, with the lake crossing organised through the excursion.

Taxis and rideshare are other airport options. Leave enough time between landing and the ship departure for delays on the road or at the airport. A road transfer booking and a farm excursion serve different journeys, so keep both sets of meeting instructions available.

Reserve your transfer from Queenstown Airport (ZQN) to Queenstown in advance on Kiwitaxi.

Car rental and parking

Queenstown car rental at ZQN can fit a wider New Zealand itinerary. For this farm visit, plan the drive only as far as Queenstown, park there and continue by ship. A rental vehicle does not turn the excursion into a drive to the farm, and the boat package should not be read as permission to use private land roads.

Read the parking signs and allow for the walk from the space you choose to the departure point. Time limits need to cover the entire outing, including its return crossing. Consult the current municipal parking information or the signs for charges rather than relying on old annual-plan tariffs. Choosing a space is a separate task from reserving a place aboard.

At the wharf and across the lake

The visitor centre address is 88 Beach Street at Steamer Wharf. Follow the meeting point for the actual product: instructions for a horse trek can depend on the selected option. The crossing takes 45 minutes each way on Earnslaw or 35 minutes on Spirit of Queenstown according to the farm FAQ. The chosen boat matters; a Walter Peak booking by itself is not a promise of a steamship.

The garden outing described here is a day excursion, with drinks extra. It includes neither an airport transfer nor hotel pickup. Compare the different farm programmes and boat options before choosing, and use the season and clothing guide for the time spent on the water. Arrange any mobility assistance ahead: farm paths include gravel, and neither ship has an accessible toilet.

Arrival questions

Does the airport bus go to Walter Peak?

Route 1 serves the Queenstown and airport road journey. The farm visit continues from Queenstown on the ship attached to the chosen excursion.

Can the garden trip collect me from my hotel?

Its meeting point is the visitor centre at 88 Beach Street. The included journey is the return crossing from Queenstown, with the garden activities and lunch, rather than hotel pickup.

Can I use a sightseeing cruise as an open return ferry?

The cruise-only product is a round trip with commentary. Choose a farm programme for a farm visit and keep to that booking's travel arrangements.
